Mahesh Movie Review - Avala Neralu – ಅವಳ ನೆರಳು (1983)

This is a little-known Horror/Suspense movie that I learnt about thanks to a post on r/bangalore . Having no specific plans for the evening and seeing that the movie is only 130 minutes long, I decided to give this a watch. Short-version of my Review There are many reasons to recommend this film. The three highlights would be: Vajramuni's diamond-like acting, Ambika's sensual expressions, and the suspense/horror elements of the film. Ambarish's character - despite having the most screen time than others - ends up being used just to push the story forward. We experience the movie through him so he becomes like a medium to reveal the plot to us, he doesn't take centre-stage or even dominate the scenes where he's in. Not that I am complaining, he was required that way for this movie to do well and the above three highlights to shine through. 90% of the film focuses on the horror/suspense aspect and doesn't waste time on the romance. In fact the romance is restric

A Random Walk down San Francisco

Image
Mission Dolores Park at afternoon , on a sunny day. I took a stroll in SF this President’s Day weekend —my first true walk to discover this city. Here’s all that happened, Walk Down 4th Street The Caltrain chugged into San Francisco station at ~10.15AM. I haven’t eaten anything since the last night’s dinner so I’m dying to run down 4th Street and sit at the bar at Mel’s Drive-In. After tagging my Clipper card at the station to pay the fare — I start walking down 4th Street. Straight off the bat, I start to see some of the sadder aspects of the city — the trash strewn on the streets and the homeless people. Most of them wearing dirt jackets/woollen cloths, munching on a Banana, a Burger King packet thrown away nearby close to their tent. One guy was throwing a tantrum(& his coat) and acting all weird on Bryant St. This was interesting to me because it’s the first time I am seeing this live. I’d only seen this on TV until now. But it was just a trailer for what was to come later(re

The Paradox of Choice - Why I miss the good 'ol TV over Netflix

Image
Too Many Choices Spoils the Mood Subscription-based channels(like Netflix, PrimeVideo, etc.) have spoilt a particular aspect of the TV experience I'm beginning to miss - the freedom from having to make a choice . I'm talking about the lack of options when selecting what to watch. The channels on cable TV would have pre-determined showtimes indicating what would screen at what time. You had no choice to pause or rewind the film, and simply had to go with whatever they were screening at the time. Many times you'd skim through the remote and land on a channel that is half-way into an action film. It didn't matter why Claude Van Damme is beating a bunch of bad guys and what happened in the prior scenes. You'd just sit & enjoy the rest of the movie. It was fun & interesting! Today, we have the added dimension of Choice. This was supposed to improve our movie-watching experience as we now have the ability to stream whatever we want to watch, pause if we want to ta

My First Blog

Image
Hi there, Welcome to my first Blog. It's 4:45pm here in Bengaluru. The sun is bright & hitting my window at an angle. I just watched a movie on Netflix called "Inhuman Kiss", or " Sang Krasue" as it's called in it's original Thai. Now I plan to have dinner: frozen parotta with Capsicum curry take-away from a neighbourhood restaurant(one of my favourite take-away options when not in the mood to cook). No plans for the evening, except maybe come up with ideas for what to write in my future blogs I guess.
